I arrived at Luang-Prabang, a charming little town... The situation is most agreeable; the mountains which constrict the Mekong both above and below this town form a circular valley, drawing an arena nine miles wide, which must once have been a lake, and frame a ravishing picture reminiscent of the beautiful lakes of Como or Geneva.

It is reached by a small 15th century spiral staircase, at the top of which are the mud walls, the cathedral ceiling with exposed roof frame, the four-poster bed and the bathroom - with shower and island bath.
